An unmatched recognition rate

The importance of recognition rate

There are now over 1 billion websites around the world.  It’s easy to see that the simple size of the database cannot be used an indication of quality.

The suitability of a filtering tool is inevitably measured by the quality and relevance of its database, that is, its capability of knowing the contents of sites visited by Internet users. To measure the suitability of a screening tool it is necessary to understand what is known as the tool’s recognition rate.

This indicator measures the percentage of sites recognized by the filtering solution compared to the total number of sites requested by the filtered users.

Olfeo:A recognition rate of more than 96% in Belgium

URL Classification methodOlfeo provides recognition rates of visited sites greater than 96%, thanks notably to dynamic filtering.  This method allows the identification of content not recognized by the database for a site that would be visited by at least one user. These sites are then (optionally) automatically uploaded to the Olfeo classifying teams dedicated to the Belgian market and then integrated into the Olfeo database which is being updated on a continuous basis.  This benefit is enhanced by pooling the results of different companies and public authorities in the same country where similar surfing habits exist.

In Belgium, for example, a company has diversified by manufacturing non-metallic pellets for a game called Airsoft.  The company’s employees have naturally increased their surfing frequency on sites related to air pistols in order to refine the design of their products.  Some of these sites have a very limited audience and are not recognized by filtering solutions.  Olfeo, thanks to its dynamic classification process, is able to classify these sites as soon as they are requested and is thus able to provide a database adapted to the actual use of the Internet in the company.

This method of dynamic classification allows Olfeo to distinguish content on blog platforms, personal sites, chat and forum sites.  The contents can vary greatly from one subject to another and are constantly evolving.

Domains such “” are host to sites falling into multiple categories. Yet many filtering products will classify all of the contents into the "hosting " category.  Olfeo is able to revert to each subdomain and then classify some sites as “professional” while others might be classified as "pornography".
